“Let me hold the door for you. I may have never walked in your shoes, but I can see: your soles are worn, your strength is torn under the weight of a story I have never lived before. Let me hold the door for you. After all you’ve walked through, it’s the least I can do.”

The Ketamine Therapy Path

Ketamine is a powerful, paradigm-shifting therapy. Its benefits are enhanced when used as a tool in a larger and ongoing effort to discover the inner healer in all of us. To manifest the long-term growth and recovery you seek, we encourage you to embrace the pivotal role you play in unleashing ketamine’s potential. This is not a passive experience. Rather, ketamine therapy exists within a journey, where ketamine is a catalyst and guide—but YOU are the empowered force on your path.

To that end, we’ve created a five pillar approach to healing to support your commitment to this work— before, during, and after each session. When followed, our approach provides momentum as you engage in exercises to capture ketamine’s long-term gains and propel your healing and expansion.

Ready: Initial Steps

First, let’s get to know each other. Book a consultation to discover if ketamine infusions can be your portal to transformation. We will invite you to complete a quick intake form to give us a sense of your background, situation, and prior knowledge of ketamine. Our patient care coordinator will contact you to schedule an initial virtual or in-person visit with Dr. Sara and answer any logistical questions. If you’re already working with a mental health provider and give us consent to collaborate with them, we’ll do so prior to your meeting with Dr. Sara. In the consultation, Dr. Sara will guide you to reflect on your goals and intentions and then design an individualized treatment course to bring you back to your foundation, values, and goals.

Reflect: Preparation for Treatment

You’re about to travel deep into the layers of your mind and discover just how much of it has remained uncharted or forgotten. The mindset you bring to your session directly impacts what you are able to get out of it. We suggest the following steps to prime yourself for deep inner exploration:

Come with an intention.

To get the most out of your treatment, it helps to set off with a clear intention. Consider which issues or concerns you want to explore. Your mental health provider can help you focus your treatment intention.

Come with an open mind.

You’re here because you’re seeking something—transformation. As you start this exploration, know that powerful, even intense, experiences are what lead us to meaningful change. When we can let go and flow with whatever experience comes, we allow ketamine to be the dynamic guide it is.

Come with an open heart.

Ketamine leads us to the emotions, memories, and concepts our hearts and minds want us to explore. It is up to us to let it also lead us through them so that we may overcome that which has blocked us from our wholeness and potential. The rewards of ketamine therapy are faster reaped when we embrace whatever we encounter on the journey. It is in following the path that we can access the treatment’s lasting effects.

Begin with breathwork.

Breathing is the most fundamental of physiological functions—and also the most profound. How you breathe is directly connected to your mood and nervous system. When you’re stressed, anxious, fearful, or angry, your breath tends to become rapid and shallow. Yet science has confirmed that consciously changing your breathing can radically change your state of mind. Specifically, breathwork—or the practice of various patterns of in- and out-breaths—can help you break through blocks and guide you to feelings of connection, expansion, clarity, and joy.We offer the option for breathwork as part of our ketamine treatment preparation or during a session to center you in the present moment, connect body and mind, ready your mindset, and shift your emotional state.

Reset: Your Ketamine Treatment Session

Dr. Sara’s focus is to ensure that each ketamine infusion session is not only personally meaningful and therapeutically significant but also safe and comforting. You will be immersed in intentionally curated sounds, scents, and sights, with the goal of encouraging a transformative experience.

The Setting

Dr. Sara’s focus is to ensure that each ketamine infusion session is not only personally meaningful and therapeutically significant but also safe and comforting. You will be immersed in intentionally curated sounds, scents, and sights, with the goal of encouraging a transformative experience.

You’re safe.

All you need to do is focus on transformation. Throughout your entire treatment, Dr. Sara will closely monitor your vital signs with state-of-the-art equipment so you can embark on your journey of inner exploration.

The space is inviting.

We’ll offer you Bose noise-cancelling headphones and a Mindfold eyeshade to augment inward travel while you listen to your preferred music or guided meditation. See our space.

Music amplifies your experience

Research shows music can evoke and attune not only our moods and physical and mental states but also our heart rate, breath rate, and blood pressure. To amplify ketamine’s effects, we use scientifically-composed music from Wavepaths.

The Therapy

Unprocessed stress, grief, pain, trauma, and fears can depress our mood and cause us to remain stuck in self-limiting stories. Ketamine works by dislodging and expunging toxic thought patterns and emotions that need to be processed in order to be overcome. The experience of ketamine infusion can range from euphoric to intense—but the therapy is always guiding you to confront the emotions and stories holding you back from your wholeness. What you encounter on your journey is a stepping stone to your growth.

The manner in which the brain perceives this transformation can sometimes manifest in unusual or surprising ways. You may have an “out-of-body experience” or feel like you are “floating” as you reflect from deep within your body and life. This is important because to some degree it parallels the intensity of the effect ketamine achieves at the molecular level. Dr. Sara will adjust the amount of ketamine your brain receives from session to session, SLOWLY, in order to maximize its effects and minimize the potential for unpleasant experiences.

In the last 30 minutes of your session, we will guide you in a “debrief” to transition you out of the infusion experience and into the next stage of your journey—integration. You are welcome to invite your mental health practitioner to your treatment to offer you guidance in this transition, or select members of our team will be available to do so as well.

Transform: Post-Treatment Integration

Your treatment session will deliver you to new awareness about yourself and your power in your life. In the weeks that follow, you will likely feel a positive boost in your mood and general outlook. However, it’s vital to remember that you are the empowered force responsible for maintaining forward movement on your path toward healing.

To crystallize the therapy’s transformative effects, it’s essential to take intentional steps after your treatment to digest, embody, and apply the insights and discoveries from your inner exploration. Consistent, ongoing follow-up with your primary doctor and/or mental health provider during and after ketamine therapy is paramount to successful treatment and creates the best chances for long-term recovery. You can do this post-treatment processing alone or with the support of our in-house therapist or your trusted mental health clinician. Research suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy can extend the antidepressant effects of the treatment, thereby reducing the frequency of maintenance infusions needed.

We use the Osmind platform and mood-tracking app to stay in touch between appointments. Via secure message during business hours, we’ll ask you to submit brief surveys to track your feelings after sessions so that we can appropriately adjust your doses in ensuing appointments. Such measurement-based care (MBC) improves patient satisfaction, outcomes, and adherence to the treatment plan and thereby enhances ketamine therapy’s effectiveness and efficiency. Journaling—in Osmind or elsewhere—is another productive way to gather and record thoughts and lessons from the treatment experience. Finally, Osmind allows you to easily submit superbills for possible out-of-network insurance reimbursement. For details, see our Osmind page here.

Incorporating healthy sleep, diet, exercise, and social connections into your journey is beneficial. We can point you to additional resources to help you reap the most benefits from your treatment. We partner with specialists in nutrition, acupuncture, movement, bodywork, breathwork, and mental health care to help you adopt and adapt wellness into your larger soft reboot experience.

Enhance: Ongoing Ketamine Infusion Sessions

We invite you to consider a series of sessions. Ketamine therapy is not intended as a one-time treatment or cure. Research published in The American Journal of Psychiatry shows IV ketamine treatments are most effective in an induction series of six infusions. We find that scheduling treatment sessions at least 5 to 7 days apart is beneficial to facilitate processing and introspection after your ketamine experience.

We will customize the number of infusions based on your clinical response and any feedback you and your trusted mental health provider may offer. We firmly believe in the importance of a team approach in individualizing your experience, and that includes prioritizing your feedback and needs. We do ask that you commit to at least two sessions so that you can begin to feel the mental and emotional shifts that ketamine can induce.  A 2022 study suggests that response rates increase over infusions 4, 5 and 6 and that multiple infusions may not just increase durability but also the chance of response.  After you have reached a happy, steady state, together we can determine if subsequent single maintenance (or “booster”) infusions may be necessary to sustain symptom improvement and on the timeline best suited to your goals.
