Dr. Sara Herman Presents on Stellate Ganglion Blocks (SGB) and Ketamine Therapy at the 2025 ASKP³ Annual Conference

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Sara Herman, MD, ABOIM, founder of Soft Reboot Wellness, was honored to speak at the 2025 ASKP³ Annual Conference, held from January 23 to 25 in Austin, Texas. The American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners (ASKP³) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the safe and effective clinical use of ketamine for treating mental health disorders and chronic pain conditions. This year’s conference brought together leading experts, researchers, and clinicians in psychedelic medicine, offering a platform to exchange the latest advancements in the field.

A Groundbreaking Presentation on Stellate Ganglion Blocks (SGB) and Ketamine Therapy

Dr. Herman was invited to present on the main stage, where she spoke about the integration of Stellate Ganglion Blocks (SGB) as an adjunct to ketamine therapy for PTSD and autonomic nervous system dysregulation. This advanced treatment approach has been gaining recognition for its potential to reset the nervous system, offering relief for patients experiencing chronic stress responses, hypervigilance, and trauma-related symptoms.

During her presentation, Dr. Herman highlighted the synergy between SGB and ketamine therapy, explaining how the dual approach can significantly improve patient outcomes. The Stellate Ganglion Block, a well-established procedure involving the precise injection of a local anesthetic near the cervical sympathetic ganglia, has been shown to modulate the autonomic nervous system, alleviating conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and even symptoms related to long COVID, POTS, and perimenopausal vasomotor symptoms.

Her talk was met with enthusiastic praise from attendees, many of whom shared their personal experiences witnessing the profound impact of these treatments. One attendee remarked:

“I have personally witnessed the profound synergy between the Stellate Ganglion Block and Ketamine IV Therapy. Your dual presentation was nothing short of exceptional—I found it immensely enlightening and masterfully delivered!”

Another commented:

“Best talk, hands down!”

Dr. Herman’s Work with Soul Strides Journey Inc.

In addition to her discussion on SGB and ketamine therapy, Dr. Herman also shared insights into her collaborative work with Soul Strides Journey Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit she co-founded with Alison Hunter, LMFT, in 2023. The Soul Strides Journey Method integrates ketamine-assisted therapy, equine-assisted therapy, and group process work, creating a unique and transformative healing experience for individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, and depression.

Soul Strides Journey was designed to provide accessible, deeply integrative healing experiences, leveraging the therapeutic power of horses and the insightful depth of psychedelic-assisted therapy. By incorporating a mind-body approach that includes IFS (Internal Family Systems), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and Jungian principles, the program fosters lasting emotional and psychological transformation.

Dr. Herman’s Expertise in Stellate Ganglion Block Therapy

At Soft Reboot Wellness, Dr. Herman offers the advanced dual injection technique of SGB for clients with PTSD and conditions related to autonomic dysregulation. Unlike traditional approaches, Dr. Herman employs real-time ultrasound guidance, ensuring precision, safety, and optimal results.

SGB has been studied for its ability to “reset” the fight-or-flight response, making it particularly effective for individuals struggling with:

Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery: Unlocking the Synergy of Ketamine and Stellate Ganglion Block

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): A Multifaceted Challenge
TBI disrupts cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning. Recovery often requires addressing neuroinflammation, autonomic dysregulation, and impaired neuroplasticity. Combining advanced therapies like Ketamine Therapy, Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB), and others creates a synergistic approach for comprehensive recovery.

Ketamine Therapy: Rewiring the Brain for Healing

Ketamine enhances neuroplasticity, resetting dysfunctional neural circuits and reducing neuroinflammation. These effects target key TBI symptoms such as cognitive fog, chronic migraines, and emotional dysregulation.

Ketamine therapy promotes neuroplasticity, fostering brain recovery and healing in TBI patients.

Key Benefits of Ketamine for TBI:

Promotes synaptic growth for long-term brain repair.

Increases Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), supporting neural resilience.

Reduces neuroinflammation, offering both immediate symptom relief and durable recovery.

Research Spotlight:

Effects of Psychoplastogens on BDNF (Molecular Psychiatry, 2024) highlights ketamine’s role in increasing BDNF levels, which drive synaptic formation and enhance brain repair.

The Neuroregenerative Potential of Ketamine in Depression: Pathways to Cognitive and Emotional Rehabilitation (Annals of Rehabilitation & Regenerative Medicine, 2024) underscores ketamine’s dual impact on structural and emotional rehabilitation.

Synergy Tip: Pair ketamine with other therapies like SGB to maximize its neuroplastic benefits.

Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB): Resetting the Nervous System

The Stellate Ganglion Block targets the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), helping TBI patients overcome autonomic imbalances like chronic headaches, emotional dysregulation, and cognitive fog.

How SGB Works:

A local anesthetic is injected near the stellate ganglion in the neck, temporarily calming overactive sympathetic pathways.

This “reset” reduces neuroinflammation, improves blood flow to the brain, and restores autonomic balance.

SGB’s Role in TBI Recovery:

Relieves Chronic Headaches: Calms overactive sympathetic nerves causing post-concussive migraines.

Enhances Emotional Stability: Reduces the stress response, improving mood and cognitive clarity.

Supports PTSD Recovery: SGB helps address co-occurring post-traumatic stress symptoms common in TBI.

Research Highlight:

The Effect of Bilateral Cervical Sympathetic Chain Blocks on TBI (Brain Sciences, 2024) demonstrated significant improvement in TBI symptoms following cervical chain blocks.

Synergy in Action: Ketamine + SGB

When combined, ketamine and SGB create an optimal healing environment:

Ketamine: Enhances neuroplasticity, fostering synaptic growth.

For those who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, the question of whether it is a type of chronic pain disorder might seem like a moot point. After all, the condition’s hallmark feature is widespread pain that lasts for months or even years. However, medical professionals and researchers have spent considerable time and effort trying to define and understand fibromyalgia, including how it relates to other types of chronic pain.

In this article, we delve into the nature of fibromyalgia and chronic pain, how they compare and contrast, and the latest advances in diagnosis and treatment.

Understanding Fibromyalgia

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder that affects the way the brain processes pain signals. It is a chronic condition that impacts an estimated 10 million people in the United States alone. The condition is characterized by widespread pain and tenderness in muscles and soft tissues.

People with fibromyalgia often experience fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, depression, and anxiety, among other symptoms. Medical experts believe that fibromyalgia is a neurological condition that results from a combination of environmental, genetic, and other factors.

Despite being a common condition, fibromyalgia is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Many people with fibromyalgia go undiagnosed for years, and some are even told that their symptoms are all in their head. This can be frustrating and disheartening for individuals who are struggling with this condition.

Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia

One of the hallmark symptoms of fibromyalgia is widespread pain that affects multiple body parts, including the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and legs. This pain can be intermittent or persistent and ranges from mild to severe. In addition to pain, people with fibromyalgia may also experience other symptoms, which can include:

Fatigue

Sleep disturbances

Morning stiffness

Headaches

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Brain fog or cognitive difficulties

Depression or anxiety

These symptoms can be debilitating and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. People with fibromyalgia may struggle to perform daily activities and may have difficulty maintaining employment or participating in social activities.

Causes & Risk Factors

The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not completely understood, but researchers believe it is the result of changes in how the brain and spinal cord process pain and other sensory information. Certain genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors have also been linked to fibromyalgia. Some of these include:

Family history of fibromyalgia or chronic pain

Physical or emotional trauma

Ongoing stress or disturbed sleep patterns

Infections or illnesses

Gender (women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men)

While anyone can develop fibromyalgia, certain factors may increase a person’s risk of developing the condition. For example, women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men, and the condition is more common in middle-aged individuals. Additionally, people who have a family history of fibromyalgia or chronic pain may be more likely to develop the condition themselves.

It is important to note that fibromyalgia is not caused by poor diet or lack of exercise, as some people may believe. While a healthy lifestyle can help manage symptoms, it is not a cure for fibromyalgia.

The Nature Of Chronic Pain

Defining Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be caused by injury, illness, or a combination of factors. The pain can be mild, moderate, or severe, and it can be constant or intermittent. Chronic pain can also lead to disability, decreased quality of life, and emotional distress.

Chronic pain is a challenging condition to diagnose and treat effectively. It requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying causes of the pain, as well as any associated psychological and emotional factors.

Common Types Of Chronic Pain

There are several types of chronic pain conditions, each with its own unique set of symptoms and challenges. Some of the most common types of chronic pain include:

Low back pain: This is one of the most common types of chronic pain, affecting millions of people worldwide. It can be caused by injury, muscle strain, or degenerative disc disease.

Impact Of Chronic Pain On Daily Life

Chronic pain can have a significant impact on a person’s daily life and overall health and well-being. It can affect a person’s ability to work, participate in leisure activities, and maintain relationships with others. People with chronic pain may experience feelings of depression, anxiety, and social isolation as a result of their condition.

Managing chronic pain can be a lifelong challenge, requiring a comprehensive treatment approach that addresses the underlying causes of the pain, as well as any associated psychological and emotional factors. Treatment options may include medication, physical therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and complementary therapies such as acupuncture and massage.

Comparing Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain

Similarities Between Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain

While fibromyalgia and chronic pain are not the same condition, they do share some common characteristics. Both conditions involve ongoing pain that can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. They can also result in other symptoms, such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive difficulties, that can make it challenging to perform daily activities.

Additionally, fibromyalgia can be considered a type of chronic pain or pain disorder due to the condition’s hallmark pain symptoms that persist for three months or longer.

Differences Between Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain

Although fibromyalgia and chronic pain share some similarities, they are distinct conditions. Chronic pain can arise from a variety of causes, such as injuries, surgeries, or diseases, while fibromyalgia is thought to be primarily a neurological condition related to pain processing.

Additionally, chronic pain may be accompanied by inflammation or physical damage, while fibromyalgia is not typically associated with visible tissue damage.

The Role Of Central Sensitization In Both Conditions

One theory that has emerged in recent years to explain the similarities and differences between fibromyalgia and chronic pain is the concept of “central sensitization.” Central sensitization refers to changes in the way that the brain and spinal cord process pain signals, resulting in heightened sensitivity to pain and other sensations.

Central sensitization is thought to occur in both fibromyalgia and chronic pain and may be one of the key mechanisms underlying these conditions.

Diagnosis & Treatment Options

Diagnosing Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain

Diagnosing fibromyalgia and chronic pain can be challenging and requires a thorough evaluation of a person’s medical history, symptoms, and physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests or blood tests may be ordered to rule out other potential causes of pain. In many cases, a definitive diagnosis may require referral to a pain specialist or neurologist.

Medications & Therapies For Fibromyalgia

Treatment options for fibromyalgia may include medications, such as antidepressants or pain relievers, as well as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, or yoga, may also be helpful for managing symptoms.

Alternative Treatments & Lifestyle Changes For Chronic Pain Management

Chronic pain management typically involves a multimodal approach that combines medications, therapies, and lifestyle changes. Alternative treatments, such as mindfulness meditation or biofeedback, may be helpful for managing chronic pain. Lifestyle changes, such as exercise, healthy eating, and stress reduction, can also be beneficial in reducing pain and improving overall health and well-being.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy For Chronic Pain

Ketamine therapy is another treatment for chronic pain. This approach involves the use of ketamine, a medication that can target and reduce pain signals in the brain. It works by blocking certain receptors and resetting the pain response. Ketamine therapy has shown potential in providing relief for individuals with chronic pain conditions.

The treatment is administered under medical supervision and has been found to be safe for many patients. With its growing recognition as a valuable option, ketamine therapy offers hope and improved quality of life for those living with chronic pain.

Our bodies’ experience of pain is a fact of life, as horrible as it may feel. Our bodies speak this language when something is wrong and needs to be expressed. Pain is the first indication that something is wrong or you’re injured.

Naturally, this pain disappears as the injury heals or as the body returns to health. However, in some cases, pain could span for months and sometimes years. This situation is often referred to as chronic pain syndrome.

What is Chronic Pain Syndrome?

Pain that lasts for three to six months is considered chronic. It is an intense pain that frequently occurs after an injury, such as a severe bone fracture or a cut on the skin. In the case of chronic pain syndrome, the pain persists long after the body has recovered from the injury.

This is a common condition amongst Americans, with about 25% of adults experiencing chronic pain. In some cases, the cause of the pain could be identified, and in others, this might not be possible. One thing is for sure: continuous pain can affect a person emotionally and impair daily life.

Causes of Chronic Pain Syndrome

Sometimes, the cause of chronic pain syndrome is not known. These cases cannot be tied to an illness or physical injury. Healthcare providers speculate this might be linked to events such as stress or conditions that affect the endorphin level in the body.

In many cases, it could be pointed to an injury or a previous painful condition such as:

Migraine and headaches

Stroke

Accidents

Lower back pain

Sickle cell anemia

Arthritis, osteoarthritis and joint problems

Muscle strains and sprains

Cancer

Nerve damage

Bone fractures

Endometriosis: a case when tissues that ought to grow within the uterus grows outside of it.

Fibromyalgia: when there is a pain in the muscles throughout the body

Pelvic pain

Spinal cord injuries

Diabetic neuropathy

Radiculopathy

Surgical trauma

Acid reflux or ulcers

Inflammatory bowel diseases: a condition where there is inflammation of the digestive tract causing cramping and intestinal pain

Repetitive stress injuries: when a particular body part is placed under the same strain or movement repetitively

People who have suffered long-term illnesses such as these can have chronic pain for a long while. Similarly, accidents and injuries can affect the body in different ways, such as lasting pains even after the injuries or diseases have been healed.

Symptoms

Symptoms of chronic pain syndrome can be seen across different aspects of life such as physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Common symptoms include:

Joint pain

Muscle pains

Fatigue

Insomnia and sleep difficulty

Mood swings

Drug abuse

Depression

Anxiety

Irritability

Suicidal thoughts

Risk factors of chronic pain syndrome

Certain risk factors make people more prone to chronic pain. These conditions include:

Depression

Depression can trigger pain. Depression changes the way messages are sent to the brain and how they are interpreted. This response is sent to the nervous system, which then interprets it as pain. Health experts identify it as a psychogenic or psychosomatic pain. These conditions are caused by psychological factors.

Smoking

Smoking increases a person’s risk of developing a number of illnesses, including fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other chronic pain diseases.

Obesity

While there is still research on this, obesity predisposes people to several health conditions and can affect the rate of recovery. It is not uncommon that many people who complain about chronic pain have obesity issues.

Age

With an increase in age, there is a higher tendency to be prone to health conditions. Thus many people who complain about chronic pain are usually above the age of 65.

Conclusion

Pain that lasts a long time, typically longer than three months, is referred to as chronic pain syndrome. Whenever you are ill, suffer an accident, or have chronic discomfort, know that treatment is possible. We can help you find relief. Contact us today to get started!

Pain is something we all experience now and then. It’s our body’s way of telling us we are hurt or ill. Typically, the pain is short-lived and goes away in a few days or as soon as the injury or illness causing it has healed. But sometimes, pain can linger long after the injury/illness causing it. When this happens, you may be suffering from chronic pain.

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is a persistent pain that lasts for more than 12 weeks or pain that continues long after the injury or illness causing it to have healed. It can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the cause.

Without proper care, this type of pain can become debilitating and interfere with a person’s ability to work, sleep, and enjoy life. Statistics show that chronic pain is a widespread problem and one of the leading causes of long-term disability in the United States. The Journal of the International Association for Pain suggests that more than 1 in 5 American adults experience chronic pain at any given time.

Causes of Chronic Pain

There are many possible causes of chronic pain. It can result from an injury, illness, or nerve damage. It can also be caused by psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression. In some cases, chronic pain can also develop without any apparent injury or illness.

It is also worth noting that chronic pain can develop years after the initial injury has healed. This is because the nervous system is already “sensitized” to pain from previous trauma.

Types of Chronic Pain

Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is a general term for conditions that cause inflammation in the joints. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which develops when the cartilage that protects the joints breaks down. This can lead to ongoing pain, stiffness, and swelling in the joints. Arthritis can also lead to chronic pain in other body parts, including the back and neck.

Back Pain

Chronic back pain is one of the most prevalent forms of pain. It can be caused by things like muscle strain, herniated discs, years of bad posture, and degenerative disc disease, among other things. Back pain mainly affects the lower back, but it can also occur in the upper back, neck, and shoulders.

Neuropathic Pain

As the name suggests, neuropathic pain is caused by damage to the nervous system. This can result from an injury, surgery, infection, or other conditions. Neuropathic pain is often manifested through a burning sensation, shooting pain, and tingling in the affected area.

Post-Trauma Pain

Post-trauma pain is pain that occurs after an injury or surgery. It may result from a fracture, sprains, or damage to the nerves, muscles, tendons, or ligaments.

Cancer Pain

Chronic cancer pain occurs when cancerous cells or tumors press on nerves or invade nearby bones or organs. Some cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can also lead to chronic pain.

Psychogenic Pain

Psychogenic pain is pain caused by psychological factors such as anxiety, PTSD, and depression. This type of pain is often hard to diagnose as there is no physical cause. These psychological factors have also been known to aggravate various forms of pain.

Risk Factors for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can affect anyone. However, several factors can increase a person’s likelihood of developing chronic pain. They include:

Age: Older adults are more likely to experience chronic pain than younger adults. This is because the body weakens and becomes more susceptible to illness with age.

Obesity: People who are obese also have a higher likelihood of developing chronic pain than people who are not obese. This may be due to the added strain on the joints and muscles. Being obese also increases the risk of developing arthritis, another leading cause of chronic pain.

Gender: Women are more likely to experience chronic pain than men. This can be tied to hormonal changes, low stress tolerance, and high pain sensitivity, which are more common in women.

Smoking: Smoking can damage the nerves and reduce blood flow to the tissues, which may exacerbate chronic pain and lead to inflammation.

Previous Injuries: People who have had previous injuries are more likely to experience chronic pain because their bodies are already sensitized to pain.

Genetics Make-Up: Although the connection between genetics and chronic pain is not fully understood, there is some evidence to suggest that certain genes or gene variations can increase one’s risk of developing chronic pain or conditions that lead to chronic pain.

Mental Illness: Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety can affect how the brain processes information, including pain signals. When this happens, the brain may interpret non-painful stimuli as painful or amplify pain signals.

The Bottom Line

Chronic pain is a serious condition that can have life-changing consequences. It can make it difficult to perform everyday activities or lead a normal life. If you are struggling with chronic pain, it is essential to talk to your doctor about your treatment options.

You got a small paper cut, put on some ointment and a bandage, and never gave it a second thought. Why? Because you knew the cause, and that the pain would eventually subside. But what if you experience pain without injury or illness, and it lingers for months or years?

What is Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is discomfort that lingers for more than three months. It can be pervasive, or it may start and stop. Chronic pain can occur anywhere on your person.

“Chronic pain can interfere with your daily activities, such as working, having a social life, and taking care of yourself or others. It can lead to depression, anxiety and trouble sleeping, which can make your pain worse. This response creates a cycle that’s difficult to break.”

Types of Chronic Pain

If you suffer from symptoms of chronic pain, some of them can be managed with ketamine. They include headaches, postsurgical pain, pain after trauma, low back pain, pain from cancer, arthritis pain, pain resulting from nerve damage, and pain not derived from disease, injury, or nerve impairment.

According to some estimates, more than 1.5 billion people globally experience chronic pain. It’s the most widespread reason for long-term disability in America, harming about 100 million citizens.

How Do You Manage Chronic Pain?

Some people manage chronic pain in a variety of ways, some recognized by science, some not at all. But before you attempt to manage chronic pain, you need to know the symptoms. Common symptoms of chronic pain may include moderate to very severe pain which doesn’t go away as you’d expect following an illness or injury. Everyone has a different experience with pain, and different thresholds, but chronic pain is often described as:

a dull ache

soreness

rigidity

stinging

squeezing

pulsing

burning

shooting

What Causes Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain may be caused by injury, illness, psychological trauma, or something else not easily identified. There also could be an underlying health issue, such as:

Chronic fatigue syndrome, where you experience oftentimes intense, protracted tiredness that’s often escorted by pain

Endometriosis, which is an excruciating condition that happens if the uterine lining develops outside the uterus

Fibromyalgia, which is pervasive discomfort within your bones and muscles

Inflammatory bowel disease, a set of conditions that results in painful, chronic swelling in a person’s digestive tract

A chronic disorder (interstitial cystitis) characterized by bladder pressure and discomfort

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, where a person suffers from uncomfortable clicking, popping, or jaw locking

Chronic vulva pain which happens but as no precise cause

Are There Pain Management Techniques?

Yes, some of which people have used successfully for years to control their chronic pain symptoms. Here are some things to try as needed.

Try whole-body stretches, soothing yoga, or tai chi in 10 to 15 minute stretches each day.

Follow an activity plan recommended by your healthcare provider to strengthen muscles, better your mood, and take your mind off the pain.

Try passive or progressive muscle relaxation, relaxed breathing, or mindfulness.

Engage in regular planning by balancing daily tasks, leisure, and other duties to foster structure and routine. Be sure to take regular breaks.

Find out what else may worsen the pain. It may be beneficial to treat anxiety and depression to minimize pain and boost your quality of life. Talk with a doctor or therapist if you notice signs of anxiety or depression.

Stay positive and do the things you enjoy, which may take some effort. Finding enjoyable activities has been known to reduce the impacts of pain indicators in the body.

Spending time with loved ones and friends in person or remotely can lessen your focus on pain.

Try and get a good night’s sleep.

Diagnosis and Treatment

To effectively manage chronic pain, a key step is diagnosis. During your doctor’s appointment, you’ll discuss your pain experience, including frequency, intensity, and any known triggers. Diagnostic tests like blood tests, bone tests, and x-rays may be recommended. Depending on the results, a psychiatric evaluation might be suggested. At Resilience Integrative Wellness in the Bay Area, we offer personalized treatment for chronic pain, drawing from the latest research, including ketamine studies.

Upon diagnosis, your healthcare provider could recommend ketamine, but most likely store-bought pain relievers, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, or lifestyle changes.

Final Thoughts

Chronic pain can be confusing and, sometimes, even depressing. By its very nature, it’s mysterious and lingering, but it also can result in other physical and psychological issues that may need treatment. If you suffer from chronic pain symptoms, talk to a doctor for helpful advice or look online.

Melodies can cheer us up, and that’s just the beginning

Some believe that the birth of the universe was accompanied by sound—the primordial om. Perhaps, that’s why human are naturally drawn to music, seeking out vibrations as a way to anchor an experiences. The notion that the melodies of Claude Debussy and Coldplay conjure certain calm is not just in your head. A 2017 study of almost 2,000 participants showed that those who had music intervention—listening or participating in music therapy projects—showed statistically significant reduction in depression levels.

Music is often used as treatment, especially in psychedelic therapy, including ketamine, to help manage mood disorders and addiction. In fact, a study in Psychopharmacology showed that music is a vessel for interpreting emotions (both positive and negative) and plays a role in “insightfulness”, creating openness and influencing one’s sense of safety. The “mystical experiences” that can come with psychedelic therapy, like IV ketamine, tied to music have also been linked to reducing depression, researchers found. Perhaps that’s why combining ketamine with vibroacoustic healing, such as the inHarmony Sound Lounge Experience at Soft Reboot Wellness, amplifies how music helps the mind relax and synchronize into a meditative state.

Here is what you need to know to curate an immersive deep listening experience in order to connect your mental and physical states.

What is Sound Healing?

You may have experienced sound healing in a yoga class, as your teachers took out a brass Tibetian singing bowl to guide meditation. Listening, and literally tuning into sound, is what helps the mind focus without completely zoning out. Perhaps that’s why sound healing can be traced back to the Aboriginal tribes playing the didgeridoo (an Australian wind instrument) and the Himalayan “sound baths.” By allowing sound, and vibrations, to wash over you, listening becomes an immersive experience. A 2019 Global Advances In Health and Medicine study showed that a 30 minute didgeridoo meditation was more effective than silent meditation for relaxation and sever stress. The sonic and wave properties of the Tibetan and quartz crystal singing bowls have also been linked to boost emotional healing in psychotherapy and counseling sessions, especially when paired with deep breathing, visualization and a nurturing environment.

What are binaural beats?

There is a reason spas play New Age music—those calming, lingering sounds that evoke images of streams and leaves waltzing with the wind—the hokey soundtrack can actually manipulate your mood. What you’re hearing are binaural beats. The reason spa music sounds so mystical is because each ear is presented with a different tone. As one study puts it: “When the 400 Hz tone is presented to the left ear and the 440 Hz tone to the right, a beat of 40 Hz is perceived, which appears subjectively to be located “inside” the head.” Meaning: music can actually change how you think. This auditory beat stimulation plays a role in how you think and process memories. What’s more, researchers found that those who listened to recordings with binaural beats reported a 26% decline in anxiety scores, compared to 11% decline in a placebo audio group.

How To Make a Mindful Playlist

Whether you’re coping with burnout, addiction, anxiety or depression, choosing music as an intervention can significantly help your psychological state. Listening to music also lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels as well as decreases your heart rate. When you feel overwhelmed refer to a curated playlist to feel better. Stress, in particular, activates the sympathetic nervous system—that’s why your heart feels like it jumped on a fast-paced treadmill. Pausing to listen to music can quell this feeling of “too much.”

To create a mindful playlist consider different categories of music. You can stick to one genre, or create your own eclectic soundtrack. Classical music, for instance, is said to ease tension, reduce fatigue and sadness. You can practically sense how the simple chords of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1 slow your breathing as they echo each other. On the other hand, Deuter, the German New Age music guru composes calming tunes using a medley of flutes, sitar, Tibetan bells and keyboard to fuse both acoustic and electronic instruments into binaural beats. Tom Middleton’s hypnotic chimes-meet-computer melodies sound other worldly, allowing your mind to shift gears from worries to looking at a moment with a new perspective. Spotify lets you create playlists, such as this Desktop Isolation compilation that assembles space-age music, with contemporary iterations of New Age-like tunes that embrace modern beats. Playlists like “Songs for Ketamine” and “Ketamine 2” are already curated to enhance the IV ketamine therapy experience—though of course can help you find calm at home sans ketamine. Adding songs with poetic lyrics, like those from Tori Amos, can stir emotions as you get lost in her piano notes.

The mindful playlist you create should be distinct to you and your needs. You may even want to create more than one to suite various circumstances—perhaps something melodic, like a classical compilation to start your day, and a nature-based playlist to wind down. Like a tasting menu, the flavors of music should complement your emotional Rolodex.
